Bill's Friend

Bill was a pillar of the Los Angeles Chapter for decades and a fount of knowledge. He was also an incorrigible rascal who loved a prank. One memory of Bill that still makes me giggle was at CPCU annual meetings in the early to mid aughts. The evening before the meeting officially started, there was usually a reception arranged for the national board, members of national committees, and their guests. Invitation only and the list was checked at the door, so even if you were registered for the meeting your name might not be on the invite list for this reception. If you weren't on the list, you weren't supposed to be admitted. Bill made it his personal mission to sneak into the reception each year, socialize happily, and at some point grin wickedly at the Society staff member who was in charge of this reception: "I'm here, what are you going to do about it?" and watch the person steam. One year he was offered an invitation and declined to be on the list. Sneaking in was so much more fun!
